It is the mission of the Family Medicine Residency Program to train excellent family physicians and to serve the community. We provide comprehensive training in family medicine. Our program serves the local community by providing a continuum of high quality patient care to all members of the family unit. In addition, the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Program teaches its residents how to coordinate a patient’s health care and best utilize the variety of professionals and agencies available. Our residents are comfortable practicing in a variety of settings – urban or rural, and they are competent in a wide range of hospital and office procedures. Residents completing this program are fully prepared for board certification in family medicine.

The curriculum (program) fulfills the following requirements:

    • American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
    • American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM)
    • Residency Review Committee (RRC)
    • Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
    • ACGME Core Competencies

Our ultimate commitment as physicians is to provide the best health care possible to our patients. As you begin this journey into your professional career, this ultimate commitment should be your guide.

Located in Pittsburgh, one of the most livable cities in the United States, the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program has graduated 228 family physicians since it was accredited in 1970. UPMC Shadyside, a progressive and well-respected hospital which has successfully integrated family medicine and other primary care with excellent secondary and tertiary care, serves as the home for the residency program. Both the program and the hospital have continued to thrive over the past 30 years, benefiting from innovative and progressive spirits. In 1997, the hospital became an integral part of the world-renowned UPMC. The Shadyside Family Medicine Department, with over 100 physicians, generates about 5,000 admissions yearly providing a wide spectrum of illness that forms the base for resident inpatient education.

Program faculty and residents believe that residency is an important passage in a physician's life; a time to challenge oneself, and a time to grow individually and corporately. This philosophy forms the foundation for the development of exemplary family physicians: balanced practitioners who are a resource not only to patients and families, but also to their own family, friends, and community.

The combination of this progressive spirit, flexibility, and caring has led to extraordinary professional results. Because of our pioneering work with an automated medical record system and our commitment to the principles of evidence-based medicine, our combined residency/faculty practice is a leader in the area of quality and cost-effectiveness. Further, our program reaches into the community where the lives of our patients and families can really be impacted.

On a national level, family medicine organizations envision family physician practices and family medicine training sites as integrated entities in the future: teaching and practicing evidence-based, outcome-driven medicine in offices, hospitals, and communities, using information technology and patient-centered communication to provide better care for diverse patient populations and families. As we reflect on this, it is clear that the future is now at UPMC Shadyside.

To put it concisely, we have high academic standards operating in a respectful educational environment. We view the health of patients, residents, and staff from a broad perspective. We smile a lot, like to laugh, but are thoughtful and caring.

As you consider where to complete your residency, we invite you to take a look at UPMC Shadyside. You won't be disappointed.

As you search for the residency program that is right for you, the faculty and residents of the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program ask you to keep a few key points in mind:

    • The faculty and residents at UPMC Shadyside take pride in our tradition of academic excellence. The atmosphere at UPMC Shadyside is one in which a resident can learn to be a quality family physician with individuality and time for pursuing personal interests. Faculty members take pride in teaching and have limited private office hours to maximize the teaching experience.

    • When asked why they chose and enjoyed the Shadyside program, many present and past residents comment on the "personality" of the program. They characterize it as one of personal growth and camaraderie. We enjoy our jobs and do what we can to maintain our academic standards and evidence-based approach in a pleasant atmosphere with a strong sense of togetherness. Even with the great diversity in the backgrounds of the faculty and residents, the program provides a strong sense of camaraderie and cohesiveness – a supportive team approach.

    • We believe that we create and must maintain the personality of our residency program. We work hard every day to maintain the atmosphere in which we take so much pride.

    • UPMC has a state of the art electronic medical record which is used in both the in-patient and out-patient setting at UPMC Shadyside.

We are dedicated to our patients, our academics, our colleagues, and our program.

Good luck in your search for a residency program.
