bullet point  Why We Are Unique

Located in Pittsburgh, one of the most livable cities in the United States, the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program has graduated 285 family physicians since it was accredited in 1970. UPMC Shadyside, a progressive and well-respected hospital which has successfully integrated family medicine and other primary care with excellent secondary and tertiary care, serves as the home for the residency program. Both the program and the hospital have continued to thrive over the past 45 years, benefiting from innovation and progression. In 1997, the hospital became an integral part of the world-renowned UPMC Health System. The Shadyside Family Medicine Department, with over 100 physicians, generates approximately 5,000 admissions per year providing a wide spectrum of diagnoses that forms the base for resident inpatient education.

Program faculty and residents believe that residency is an important passage in a physician's life; a time to challenge oneself, and a time to grow individually and corporately. This philosophy forms the foundation for the development of exemplary family physicians; balanced practitioners who are a resource not only to patients and families, but also to their own family, friends, and community.

The combination of this progressive environment, flexibility, and caring has led to extraordinary professional results. Our passion for innovation can be seen in our pioneering work with automated medical record systems, patient-centered medical home, and current work with chronic care management and population health. We are committed to the principles of evidence-based medicine. The combined residency/faculty practice is a leader in the area of quality improvement and cost-effectiveness. In addition, our program reaches into the community where the lives of our patients and families can really be impacted.

There are fourteen centering sites in Pennsylvania and two are in Pittsburgh. Obstetrics at Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC and UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center which is the only family medicine residency program in Pittsburgh with a centering site.

On a national level, family medicine organizations envision family physician practices and family medicine training sites as integrated entities of the future: teaching and practicing evidence-based, outcome-driven medicine in offices, hospitals, and communities, using information technology and patient-centered communication to provide better care for diverse patient populations and families. As we reflect on this, it is clear that the future is now at UPMC Shadyside.

To be exact, we have high academic standards operating in a respectful educational environment. The health of patients, residents, and staff are viewed from a broad perspective. We smile a lot, like to laugh and are thoughtful and caring.
