    Description:

The UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program offers an acting internship in family medicine, where medical students can explore the family medicine approach to medicine, and learn more about our residency program. This rotation is largely an inpatient experience at UPMC Shadyside. You will work alongside family medicine residents admitting patients from the emergency department and the Family Health Center. The rotation is unique in that all patients are overseen by family medicine attending physicians. Our residents admit patients from approximately 47 community family physicians. You will treat patients in the emergency room, inpatient wards, and intensive care units. Learning occurs through close interaction with patients' attending family physicians and with senior family medicine residents.

Formal didactic teaching is led by the team’s attending, a residency faculty physician who meets with the care team daily during sign-in, as well as for walk rounds. This family medicine attending conducts daily teaching sessions, which include didactics, integrated behavioral science rounds, pharmacy rounds, and radiology rounds. Topics range from basic clinical skills to disease diagnosis and management. Care team walk rounds occur daily. You will also participate in the residency's weekly all-afternoon multi-disciplinary conferences. For those students with a particular interest in Family Medicine, additional outpatient experiences can potentially be incorporated, which will be discussed on an individual basis.

    Objectives:

This rotation will provide you with much opportunity for learning medicine and help you to develop the independent skills you will need as an intern. The internship gives students an in-depth look at our residency program, and it is most appropriate for a medical student who is anticipating applying for residency in family medicine.

bullet point  Third Year Medical Student Clerkship

    Description:

Emphasis will be placed on the development of ambulatory care skills in a Family Medicine setting. Students will see scheduled patients with resident and faculty at the Family Health Center. They will be responsible for initial patient assessment, including history, physical examination, and in-office laboratory testing. Students will develop and implement comprehensive management plans, including preventive and therapeutic measures. One-on-one supervision and teaching is provided during office hours.

This rotation will incorporate the following disciplines:

    • Adult Medicine
    • Pediatrics
    • Women’s Health
    • Adolescent Medicine
    • Geriatrics
    • Sports Medicine
    • Procedural Skills

Students can have office hours in Sports Medicine and procedure clinics when available. They will participate in weekly didactics with Sports Medicine and resident conferences. Our office allows for experience with EKG reading, spirometry, and office microscopy.

Students will utilize the Family Health Center’s computerized medical record system and be exposed firsthand to the many productive uses of a computer in the office setting. The clerkship will provide a basic background in the unique aspects of ambulatory medicine and full spectrum family medicine.

    Objectives:

    1. Perform accurate, problem-oriented interviews that promote good doctor-patient relationships.

    2. Perform competent problem directed physical examinations in an efficient manner.

    3. Outline appropriate diagnostic approaches and comprehensive management plans for problems commonly seen in primary care settings.

    4. Acquire familiarity with basic approaches to time management, patient education, family involvement, and compliance issues in primary care.

    5. Gain an appreciation for the depth and breadth of Family Medicine by seeing patients representing the full life-cycle from infants to adolescents to adults, prenatals and elders and all of their medical issues that bring them to their physician.

    Requirements:

Because this clerkship involves advance office scheduling, all student schedule requests and changes must be made at least four weeks prior to the start of the rotation.
