Tamera Means, MD

  • First Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

I am interested in the Global Health Track Program.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program?  Why Pittsburgh?

During my interview, I felt very comfortable with the program, leadership and staff.  I also liked how the program enables a level of customization to meet the needs of the resident while delivering comprehensive coverage of the curriculum and providing a strong support system. Furthermore, UPMC Shadyside’s FMR program addresses several areas I’m interested in. The program’s global health track is truly unique and I was very impressed with the opportunities in integrative medicine and the program’s dedication to the underserved.  In addition, my brother lives in Pittsburgh and I liked the idea of having family support in the area.

What are your goals while here in the residency program?  How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

My goal is to absorb as much information as possible from the faculty, staff, and patient cases.  I intend to master my clinical skills, improve my communication techniques and strengthen my leadership abilities.  Learning how to be comfortable within the hospital and clinical environment will help me in perfecting the confidence to handle any situation. This growth will prepare me to be the best physician possible.

Do you have any specials interests outside of the residency?

My interest includes spending time with family and friends, reading, swimming, Latin dance, and outdoor activities.  I am also very interested in travel, learning about different cultures, and trying new things.
