Schlar.jpg Lisa Schlar, MD
Director, Women's Health
Medical School: University of Arizona
Residency Training: University of New Mexico
Board Certified: 1996
Joined Faculty: 2001

Dr. Schlar is originally from Phoenix, Arizona. During medical training, her interest in medically-underserved populations led her from Indian reservations in the Southwest to India, South Africa, and Ecuador. After residency, she joined an exciting practice caring for native Eskimos in rural Alaska. There she enjoyed the full spectrum of family medicine, including obstetrics and emergency care. Flying to remote villages to provide primary care for those unable to travel was among her most rewarding experiences while working there.

Dr. Schlar joined the faculty in January 2001 when her family relocated to Pittsburgh to be near relatives. She spent 11 years seeing patients at the East End Community Health Center and in February 2012, she brought her continuity practice to the Family Health Center where she actively sees patients and teaches residents and medical students.

While Dr. Schlar enjoys seeing whole families, her real passion is providing care for women and children. While she is no longer in the delivery room after nearly 20 years, Dr. Schlar continues to provide prenatal care and passionately teaches the importance of family centered maternity care to residents and students. Since 2007, Dr. Schlar has been the Director of Women’s Health, where she coordinates the gynecology curriculum for residents and leads the quality efforts for prenatal care and women’s health at the Family Health Center to improve maternal health and future birth outcomes.

Dr. Schlar maintains harmony in her personal life by working part-time and by sharing home responsibilities with her husband, Dr. Alan Finkelstein, who is also a part-time faculty member at UPMC Shadyside. Lisa enjoys flower gardening, arty endeavors, wilderness adventures and international travel with her husband and kids, Ariana and Jordan. In her free time, she is very active in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and holds several leadership positions in the community.
