Barry Coutinho, MBBS, is Vice-Chief, Division of Family and Community Medicine, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Director of the Inpatient Teaching Service, and serves as Chair of the UPMC Family Medicine Education Committee.
Dr. Barry Coutinho received his medical degree from Guy's Hospital, London, obtaining the Charles Forster Prize in Cardiology. He completed his residency training at St. George's Hospital, London. Dr. Coutinho then gained experience in general practice in London before coming to Pittsburgh for family medicine residency training at UPMC Shadyside. During residency, he served as chief resident before joining the faculty in 1995. He is board-certified and has special interests in dermatology and cardiology.
Dr. Coutinho enjoys giving classical piano concerts for medical charities. He was the double prize winner in both the 2011 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, and the 2013 Washington DC International Piano Artists competition. Dr. Coutinho was awarded the best performance of a post-romantic piece at the Cliburn and Washington Post Press Jury Award at the DC competition.
In his spare time, he enjoys watching and playing sports with his kids.
