Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program? Why Pittsburgh?

I chose this program because of how great the people were. Everyone I met was very kind and expressed how much they genuinely enjoyed the program. The culture seemed conducive to learning, growth, and wellness. Also, the program showed a commitment to both academic medicine as well as community involvement and engagement. I was also very encouraged by the many positions that residents found themselves in after graduating. Past graduates have gone into many different areas within family medicine as well as various areas within and outside of the United States. Lastly, the program is well-suited for me to explore many of my interests within and outside of clinical medicine. I chose Pittsburgh because it is a beautiful city with a lot of things to do, and it is not too overwhelming.

What are your goals while here in the residency program? How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

My goal is to learn the science and skill of medicine from the many faculty, residents, program staff, and patients that I encounter. I want to become a knowledgeable and competent physician that can best treat my patients. I also hope to grow personally by learning to be understanding and compassionate, as well as fostering many other important qualities in myself. While I cultivate these skills, I aim to maintain and strengthen my life and many interests outside of medicine, which I believe are a key aspect of my own well-being and contributive to my overall effectiveness as a physician. All of this will allow me to be a truly well-rounded and caring physician who is willing to empathize with my patients and understand their context, ready to administer truly humanistic care to tackle the many issues they or the community in general may be facing.

Do you have any special interests outside of the residency?

Some of my interests include watching movies and shows, watching and playing sports (especially soccer), running, reading, listening to music, and going to concerts, trying new foods, learning about new cultures and places, and exploring/adding random hobbies. Other random interests include pop culture, philosophy, cosmology, humanism in medicine, learning about people and their hobbies, and film production/cinematography.
