Stephanie Barel, DO

  • Second Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

I am in the Osteopathic Recognition Track. My other special interests include Sports Medicine and Addiction Medicine.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program?  Why Pittsburgh?

Prior to medical school, I worked at UPMC Shadyside as a pharmacy technician.  I witnessed firsthand what an exceptional hospital it is.  Being at Shadyside felt like being part of a family.  As a fourth-year medical student, I was able to do a rotation with the residency clinic.  I was impressed with how everyone was so friendly, supportive, and genuinely excited to teach, helping both the medical students and residents grow into better clinicians.

Pittsburgh is my home. I was born here, and a good portion of my family is still in the area. I hope to stay here long-term, even after residency.

What are your goals while here in the residency program? How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

My goal in residency is to learn as much as possible in the many various rotations we get to experience through family medicine. This will help me become a more competent, confident, and well-rounded physician who is prepared for anything my patients come to me with in the future.;

Do you have any specials interests outside of the residency?

Outside of residency, you can most often find me watching hockey.  I am a HUGE Pittsburgh Penguins fan! I enjoy playing piano and guitar and going to as many concerts as my schedule will allow.  I also love spending time with my family, friends, and my three cats.
