Fourth-Year Medical Student Acting Internship

Description

The UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Acting Internship offers fourth-year medical students an immersive experience in inpatient family medicine. Based at Shadyside Hospital, students will work alongside residents and family medicine faculty to manage hospitalized patients, refine clinical skills, and develop comprehensive care plans. This hands-on rotation emphasizes history-taking, physical exams, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based management while fostering independence and critical thinking. Students will actively participate in rounds, didactics, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Limited outpatient experiences are also available. This opportunity offers students an in-depth look at our residency program and is most appropriate for those anticipating applying for a residency in Family Medicine.

Third-Year Medical Student Clerkship

Description

The UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Outpatient Clerkship offers third-year medical students a dynamic, hands-on experience in ambulatory family medicine. Based at the Shadyside Family Health Center, students will work closely with residents and faculty to refine history-taking, physical exam, and clinical reasoning skills while managing a diverse patient population. This rotation includes opportunities to participate in office-based procedures, sports medicine, and preventive care, along with weekly didactic sessions. Students will progress in clinical independence using the ORIME framework while receiving individualized feedback and mentorship. 2025 Clerkship Application

Objectives

  1. Perform accurate, problem-oriented interviews that foster good doctor-patient relationships
  2. Conduct competent, problem-directed physical examinations efficiently
  3. Outline appropriate diagnostic approaches and comprehensive management plans for common primary care problems
  4. Gain familiarity with basic approaches to time management, patient education, family involvement, and adherence issues in primary care
  5. Appreciate the depth and breadth of Family Medicine by seeing patients across the full life cycle, from infants to elders, including prenatal care, preventative care, and management of chronic conditions.
