Family Health Center

The UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center is an outpatient Family Medicine office located in the heart of Shadyside, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA. We care for patients who reside in surrounding communities including East Liberty, Wilkinsburg, Shadyside, Oakland, and Homewood.

Our diverse patient population is comprised of both those who grew up in the community and those who have moved here for school or work. We see a higher percentage of Medicaid patients compared to other Community Medicine locations in our area.

We use EpicCare as our electronic health record (EHR) which is used throughout the UPMC system for outpatient practices. UPMC is transitioning to Epic Bridges as a unified EHR across inpatient and outpatient settings.

We care for many patients who speak a variety of languages. Our International Clinic provides longer visits to those whose first language is not English to allow time to utilize interpreter services for these visits. Many of our Japanese patients utilize this service or see Japanese-speaking faculty or residents.

We are passionate about addressing social determinates of health. For those who need it, we have grant-funded shelf-stable food boxes, fresh food vouchers, and bus tickets. Our social work team also provides support and community referrals. We offer home visits for those patients who are homebound. These visits often include faculty, residents, and our pharmacy team.

Our pharmacy program includes a full-time Pharmacist, a second-year pharmacy resident, and rotating pharmacy students. The program performs post-discharge medication reconciliation, medication management, continuous glucose monitoring, and protocol-driven interventions.

Our practice is designated as LGBTQIA+ affirming. All faculty, residents, and staff obtain education on how to maintain a safe inclusive- environment while providing preventative and gender-affirming care to those who need it.

We have a comprehensive behavior health program. Our Psychiatrist provides consult services on Wednesdays. In addition, two therapists provide short-term counseling services and our Depression Care Manager provides collaborative care for those with depression.

Our social work Care Manager provides dedicated support to patients with alcohol and substance use disorders (AUD and SUD). We have weekly Recovery Clinic sessions for initiation and stabilization of patients with AUD and SUD and have dedicated sessions for patients diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Residents learn how to manage stable patients with AUD, SUD, and hepatitis C in their scheduled office hours.

We perform a variety of procedures within the scope of Family Medicine. These include point of care ultrasound (POCUS), joint injections, colposcopies, long-acting contraceptive insertions and removal (LARC – IUDs and Nexplanon), as well as dermatologic excisions, biopsies, and cryotherapy.

We have two obstetric gynecologists who support resident teaching of routine gynecological care and common procedures. Our office provides full obstetric care including prenatal care and deliveries at UPMC Magee Hospital. We are the first residency in Pennsylvania that provides certified Centering Pregnancy group visits for our pregnant patients and their partners.

Our preceptors are faculty members or community family medicine physicians. The inclusion of preceptors outside of our faculty allows for different perspectives to be considered and integrated into care delivery.

Our program offers teaching didactics every Wednesday afternoon. These seminars tend to emphasize techniques of problem-solving rather than a lecture-only approach. Many third- and fourth-year medical students rotate through our office and attend our didactic sessions.

The skilled and dedicated Family Health Center staff plays a major role in helping residents care for patients. Shadyside Family Health Center leadership believes that every interaction in the office models what you may encounter in your future practice. Office protocols are developed by residents, faculty, and staff to ensure appropriate care. The office has phlebotomy, x-ray, and point of care testing that allows you to learn how to diagnose and develop a treatment plan during the office visit. Our goal is to develop competent and confident Family Physicians to succeed in all domains of Family Medicine, whether in an urban, suburban, or rural setting.
