Austin Grist, DO

  • Second Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

I am in the Allopathic Track.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program?  Why Pittsburgh?

The UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Program was my first introduction to family medicine during my clinical years through medical school. Every aspect of this program showed me the importance of Family Medicine in America’s health system and the many opportunities you can have with Family Medicine. Every person I worked with was very well educated, compassionate, and worked well with each other.

Pittsburgh is not only a city close to home for me, but one of the best cities in America. The culture, community, and legacy of this city is not seen in many others. From the food, theatre, sporting events, community events, health care, Heinz Ketchup, museums, rivers, and more, Pittsburgh is a wonderful and safe city to explore and become a part of.

What are your goals while here in the residency program?  How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

I want to take every aspect of my training from medical school and expand it into becoming the best family physician I can be. I hope to continue my training into general practice with a focus on Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). I hope to reach out to as many patients as I can, getting them access to the care they need while trying to help with their more acute or chronic issues with my skills through OMM.

Do you have any special interests outside of the residency?

Outside of residency, my special interests include cooking, playing soccer, reading, movies, kayaking, hiking, fishing, running, trying new foods, and going to the movies
