Hugh Abe, MD, PhD

  • Second Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

Currently, I am not. But I am interested in palliative care and caring for the underserved.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program? Why Pittsburgh?

I felt this program would best suit me for success in my career path. With such an enriched history and a high reputation for training family physicians, I feel confident that this is the ideal place for me to be exposed to full-spectrum family medicine. I was pleasantly surprised to find many beautiful parks within the Pittsburgh area. As a parent of a young son, it was essential to me to be in an environment where there was a lot of greenery. I also felt this would be a wonderful opportunity for me to be back on the east coast and close to my hometown in Maryland.

What are your goals while here in the residency program? How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

To establish myself as a solid, well-rounded family physician that can be flexible and knowledgeable to a wide range of patients’ needs regardless of psychosocial background, race, and culture.

Do you have any special interests outside of the residency?

Spending time with my wife and our son. Anything related to the NBA and NFL. I also enjoy playing the piano and watching comedy sitcoms.
