Margaret Mass, MD

  • Second Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

Yes, I am in the global health track.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program?  Why Pittsburgh?

I am familiar with the excellent care and education provided by UPMC. The Shadyside family medicine program offers many of the benefits of a community program - namely people have personal relationships and have been here for a long time, while also receiving the benefits of access to the educational and patient resources from a big university setting like social work and behavioral health linked to clinic, availability of specialists. On interviewing, the residents seemed like they worked hard and became very competent in whatever area of focus they choose (lots of different ones!), but people also had fun and interests outside of residency.

I have lived in Pittsburgh before and have friends in the area still. It is a very easy city to live in. Relatively inexpensive, small enough to get to places quickly, with enough fun stuff to explore and good outdoors access.

What are your goals while here in the residency program?  How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

To become a very competent physician in a variety of settings for a wide variety of patients! We do train in lots of settings and have lots of help in a multitude of areas!  There is gradual increase of responsibility - appropriate clinical freedom with good oversight. Experience working internationally through the global health track.

Do you have any specials interests outside of the residency?

Rock climbing, hiking, travel, restaurants, and cooking for friends, reading, writing. Also, houseplants!
