Sophia Korman, DO

  • Second Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

I am in the Osteopathic Recognition (OR) track. My interests are in non-OB women’s health, lifestyle medicine, and procedures.

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program?  Why Pittsburgh?

It sounds cheesy, but I chose UPMC Shadyside because of the people! Everyone I talked to during the interview day and the resident Q&A was super nice and welcoming. I could tell there was a friendly dynamic and environment. I was also drawn to UPMC Shadyside because of all the opportunities! There are so many options to explore different interests and cater your training to match what you focus on.

I love Pittsburgh because I lived here for 4 years when I was at Pitt (H2P!) and was excited for the chance to come back. Being a foodie, I love all the great restaurants here. It is a very walkable city, too!

What are your goals while here in the residency program?  How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

My goals here are to grow not only academically, but also as a person. I hope to gain lots of knowledge, become more confident in my skills, and become more comfortable performing procedures. Moreover, I hope to make new connections and friendships! I believe that an excellent physician is both knowledgeable and personable.

Do you have any specials interests outside of the residency?

My favorite things to do in my free time would have to be reading and playing my Nintendo Switch (mainly Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing right now). I also enjoy trying new restaurants and cafes. When I have the time, I love to travel as well. I’ve been to seven countries so far and hope to visit a ton more!
