Teiichi Takedai, MD

Dr. Takedai was born and raised in Japan. He graduated from Hirosaki University School of Medicine in 1988. In 2001, he came to the United States to seek additional training in family medicine over ten years of practice as a general and plastic surgeon in Japan.

Subsequently, he completed his family medicine residency training at UPMC Shadyside. Dr. Takedai moved to Indiana, where he served for three years as a family medicine physician and a site medical director of a federally qualified health center. He joined the faculty at UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine in 2008. He completed Faculty Development fellowship at University of North Carolina in 2014.

As a family physician, he has special interests in comprehensive primary care including prenatal care, gynecology care, point of care ultrasound, hepatitis C treatment, medication assisted treatment for substance use disorders, and integrative medicine such as acupuncture therapy.  He performs various office procedures including skin biopsy, surgical repair for minor injuries, colposcopy, contraceptive implant, and IUD insertion.

Dr. Takedai also enthusiastically facilitates the international educational collaboration between the United States and Japan to improve the quality of postgraduate medical education for Japanese physicians. Also, he coordinates the observership opportunities for medical students and young physicians from Japan.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Takedai has directed community outreach activities for the Japanese people in Pittsburgh at the Family Health Center with support from the UPMC Shadyside Hospital Foundation.
