Women's Health Curriculum

Residents at the Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program receive in-depth training in Women’s Health.  Residents will spend two weeks during their first year gaining pelvic exam and basic gynecology competency and then a second month in their second year working directly with gynecologists and family physician attendings, gaining skills necessary to provide comprehensive gynecologic care, including proficiency in options counseling, increasing procedural competency and direct exposure to operative gynecology and office gynecologic consultations.  Elective rotations are available for additional training in gynecology, including abortion care.

Gynecology teaching is a major part of every resident’s office practice, with many opportunities to learn well-woman care, provide family planning and contraceptive counseling, treat STIs, and manage common gynecologic problems. Residents will learn routine office gynecologic procedures, and they will have the opportunity to achieve competency in IUD and Nexplanon insertion, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy.

Didactic lectures, case presentations, precepting, workshops, and community outreach activities regularly address issues in gynecology and general women's health care.  By the end of training at UPMC Shadyside, residents feel very comfortable providing comprehensive gynecologic care for their female patients.
