Women’s Health Curriculum
Residents at the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program receive comprehensive training in women’s health. In their first year, residents complete a two-week rotation focused on developing competency in pelvic exams and basic gynecology. During their second year, they spend a month working directly with gynecologists and family medicine attendings, gaining experience in comprehensive gynecologic care, options counseling, procedural skills including LARC placement, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy, and exposure to both operative gynecology and office consultations.;
In addition to dedicated gynecology rotations, education in gynecology is an integral part of every resident’s office practice, with ongoing opportunities to learn well-woman care, family planning, contraceptive counseling, STI treatment, and the management of common gynecologic conditions.
Didactic lectures, case discussions, precepting, workshops, and community outreach activities further reinforce gynecology and women’s health education. By the end of their training at UPMC Shadyside, residents are well-equipped to provide comprehensive gynecologic care for their female patients.
